Peterhansel keeps on consolidating his leadership in a stage that was a rest day for the motorbikes

The stage between Bamako and Kayes will be raced tomorrow as planned

With the memory of Fabrizio Meoni, today's stage of the Dakar 2005 was held with the motorbikes being transferred by plane after the agreement reached with the organisation. It was a rest day for the motorbikes with the intention of calming down the riders, allowing them to face tomorrow's stage in better conditions.

The air transportation was carried out without any problem and the overall standings of the car class haven't experienced any change. Stephane Peterhansel keeps on consolidating his leadership with an advantage of 23.16 over his team-mate Luc Alphand. Giniel de Villers was the winner of the stage but there has been no important change. Nani Roma dropped down from overall fifth to sixth but is still protagonising an excellent debut with the Mitsubishi Repsol.

In today's 586-km special, the terrain changed completely, with more vegetation, crossings and changes of direction, reaching more inhabited areas. The road is harder with tracks covered with laterite, a kind of gravel used to avoid the formation of mud in the rain season, which has deteriorated the track compared to the indications in the road book. The planned parc ferme of today's marathon stage has been cancelled.

The stage tomorrow will take the participants from Bamako to Kayes including a 370-km special.
