A jointly decided route
The route is drawn up in close collaboration with the governmental, environmental and heritage authorities.
· In Argentina: the Environment Ministry and services of each province crossed.
· In Bolivia: the Environment and Culture Ministries.
· In Chile: the CMN (Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales – National Monuments Council), the MMA (Ministerio Medio Ambiente – Environment Ministry), the CONAF (Corporación Nacional Forestal de Chile – Chilean National Forestry Corporation) and the CONADI (Corporación Nacional de Desarrollo Indígena – National Corporation for Indigenous Development).

· Performance of studies with experts to identify all the sites.
· Implementation of protection measures at all the sites.
· 150,000 USD are set aside for these measures.
Offsetting of the carbon footprint
· 100% of the direct CO2 emissions (from the organisers, competitors and logistics) are offset.
· 460,000 USD have been invested as a result in the Madre de Dios project. It is a project that supports the construction of a trans-oceanic road through the Amazon rain forest. The aim is to avoid uncontrolled deforestation which generally occurs around this type of works. Madre de Dios helps the local populations to maintain the wildlife and plant life.
Demanding and optimised organisational standards
· Site inventories are performed at each bivouac in the presence of the governmental authorities.
· 60 tonnes of aluminium, plastic, glass, cardboard, etc., and 19 tonnes of tyres were recycled in 2013 thanks to selective sorting set up at the bivouacs.
· 5,000 litres of used oil and 29 tonnes of waste (batteries, rags, filters, etc.) were processed in 2013 by approved companies. • Waste water from each bivouac is recuperated and treated.
· As in 2013, all the competitors must sign the environmental charter.
Cleaning of the route
· Teams made up of several organisation vehicles follow behind the race each day.
· Collection of waste will be organised at the spectator zones immediately after the passage of the rally.
