Stage 13 notes

500 - CHAGIN... TAKE SEVEN!..

The first 3 trucks have just completed the day's special stage and - unsurprisingly enough - it is Russia's Vladimir Chagin (Kamaz) who wins this 33rd Dakar; this is his 7th Dakar victory. It is also a new record in the truck category, just one victory shy of Czech driver Karel Loprais. In the final standings, Chagin finishes 30'04 ahead of his team mate and countryman Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz). More importantly, Kamaz has four of its trucks at the four first places of the standings, as young Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) finishes third and Ilgizar Mardeev (Kamaz), fourth.

502 - And the last stage goes to ... Kabirov

The first 5 trucks have just completed the day's special stage and it is Russian driver Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz) who wins the last special stage of this Dakar; this is his fourth victory this year, and his 37th in his Dakar career. He finished 1'15 ahead of his team mate and countryman Vladimir Chagin (Kamaz), and 2'02 ahead of German driver Franz Echter (MAN).

502 - Kabirov still in the lead at CP3

The first 6 trucks have just cleared CP3 located on km 169 of today's special stage and Russian driver Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz) is still best provisional time, 21" ahead of his team mate and countryman, and the steady leader of the overall standings, Vladimir Chagin (Kamaz) and 37" ahead of Germany's Franz Echter (MAN).

502 - Kabirov widens the gap in the lead

The first 6 trucks have just cleared CP2 (km 114) of today's special stage and Russian driver Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz) is still best provisional time, now 22" ahead of the Dakar leader, his countryman and team mate Vladimir Chagin (Kamaz) and 32" ahead of German driver Franz Echter (MAN).

502 - Kabirov, leader by 1" at CP1

The first 6 trucks have just cleared CP1 (km 47) of today's special stage and Russia's Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz) is best provisional time by a short 1" ahead of his team mate and fellow countryman - who is also leader in the general standings - Vladimir Chagin (Kamaz) and 18" ahead of Dutchman Marcel Van Vliet (MAN).

302 - FIRST DAKAR VICTORY FOR AL-ATTIYAH!

The first two cars have just finished the day's special stage and it is Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (VW) who is the day's winner but it is Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah (VW) who is the final winner of this 33rd Dakar... a first for him! In the end, with 4 stage victories, the Qatari finishes 49'41 ahead of his South-African team mate Giniel De Villiers (VW), and 1h20'38 ahead of his Spanish team mate Carlos Sainz (VW), who does remain the best performer of this year's rally raid with 7 stage victories in total. It is also a triple victory for Volkswagen that will hold all the places on the podium in Buenos Aires and just barely misses the perfect game with 12 stage victories out of the 13 possible!

500 - I's a go for trucks!

Yesterday's winner of stage 12 and solid general standings leader, Russian driver Vladimir Chagin (Kamaz) opened the day's truck special stage at 13:39 as per schedule and was followed 2 minutes later by his team mate and countryman Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz).

300 - Sainz leader at CP3

The first 5 cars have just cleared CP3 located on km 169 of today's special stage and Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (VW) is still in the lead 53" ahead of his Qatari team mate and standins leader Nasser Al-Attiyah (VW) and 1'11 ahead of Poland's Krzysztof Holowczyc (BMW).

003 - "Chaleco" loses his 3rd place in the general standings

Victim of mechanical problems since km 159 of today's special stage, Chilean rider Francisco Lopez Contardo (Aprilia) just finished with the day's ordeal. Unfortunately, "Chaleco" lost 1h12'29 to Portuguese rider Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha) who reaches third place on the podium and in the general standings at the very last minute.

300 - Sainz on a roll...

The first 5 cars just cleared CP2 (km 114) of today's special stage and Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (VW) is still best provisional time, 30" ahead of standings leader, his Qatari team mate Nasser Al-Attiyah (VW), and 35" ahead of Polish driver Krzysztof Holowczyc (BMW).

252 - WHEN A PATRONELLI IS GONE, THERE IS ALWAYS A SECOND ONE WAITING IN AMBUSH

The first 5 quads have just completed this 13th and last special stage of the Dakar and after final victory went to the youngest of the Patronelli brothers in 2010, it is now his older brother, Argentine rider Alejandro Patronelli (Yamaha) who wins the stage and the rally raid for the first time, 59'53 ahead of his fellow countryman Sebastian Halpern (Yamaha), and 6h17'38 ahead of Polish rider Lukasz Laskawiec (Yamaha).

269 - Laskawiec steals the third place on the final podium

The first two quads have just finished today's special stage and it is Polish rider Lukasz Laskawiec (Yamaha) who is the day's winner, 4'11 ahead of French rider Christophe Declerck (Polaris), and who steals the thrid place on the podium and in the final standings from the latter for 52".

003 - "Chaleco" finishes in tow

Chilean rider Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez (Aprilia) has had to stop again shortly after CP3 (km 169) of today's special stage because of an electrical breakdown and is now being towed by his team mate, Franco-Malian rider Alain Duclos (Aprilia).

300 - Sainz... for the beauty of it!...

The first 5 cars have just cleared CP1 (km 47) of today's special stage and it is Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (VW), who is already the top performer of this 33rd Dakar with 6 stage victory that gets best provisional time, 7" ahead of the leader in the general standings, his Qatari team mate Nasser Al-Attiyah (VW), and 14" ahead of Polish driver Krzysztof Holowczyc (BMW).

003 - "Chaleco" back in the race!...

Victim of a broken suspension on km 159 of today's special stage, Chilean rider "Chaleco" Lopez (Aprilia) was able to repair and continue after receiving assistance from his team mates, Franco-Malian rider Alain Duclos (Aprilia) and Spanish rider Gerard Farres Guell (Aprilia).

253 - Declerck, still ranking third in the general standings... by 12"

The first 5 quads have just cleared CP2 located on km 114 of today's special stage and it is still Polish rider Lukasz Laskawiec (Yamaha) who is in the lead with best time, now 3'07 ahead of his main contender in the general standings, French rider Christophe Declerck (Polaris), and 4'00 ahead of standings leader, Argentine rider Alejandro Patronelli (Yamaha).

300 - Sainz starts the last car special stage...

The winner of stage 12 yesterday, Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (VW) started the day's special stage in the car category at 12:22 as per schedule and was followed 2' later by his South-African team mate Giniel De Villiers (VW).

001 - MARC COMA WINS HIS THIRD DAKAR

The first 5 bikes just completed today's special stage and it is Spanish rider Marc Coma who is the winner of the 33rd Dakar in the bike category; he finished 15'04 ahead of French rider Cyril Despres. This is the third Dakar victory of the Catalan who already won the rally raid in 2006 and 2009.

016 - And the last stage goes to Verhoeven!...

The first 5 bikes have just completed today's special stage and it is Dutch rider Frans Verhoeven (BMW) who is the day's winner; it is his third stage victory in a Dakar and his first stage victory in 2011. The Dutchman finished 5" ahead of Portugal's Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha), and 44" ahead of French rider Cyril Despres (KTM).

003 - A broken shock absorber for "Chaleco"!...

Chilean rider Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez (Aprilia) seems to have experienced the rupture of a rear shock absorber on km 159 of today's special stage. It is to be recalled that at the start of this last Dakar special stage, the Chilean rider was ranking third in the overall standings, 43'04 ahead of Portugal's Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha) who has already reached the finish of the 13th and last special stage.

269 - The battle for third place in the general standings is on...

Being just 3'19 at the start of the last special stage today, behind French rider Declerck (Polaris) who is ranking third in the general standings, Lukasz Laskawiec (Yamaha) opened the day animated by the fighting spirit. Hence, the Polish rider has achieved best provisional time at CP1, 1'07 ahead of the Polaris rider and 1'57 ahead of the standings leader, Argentine rider Alejandro Patronelli (Yamaha).

002 - Verhoeven still in the lead by 1" at CP2

The first 10 bikes just cleared CP2 located on km 114 of today's special stage and it is still Dutchman Frans Verhoeven (BMW) who has achieved best provisional time and is still a tiny little second ahead of - now - French rider Cyril Despres (KTM). Portuguese rider Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha) is provisionally in third position, 13" behind the present stage leader.

253 - It's a go for quads!...

The winner of yesterday's stage 12, Frenchman Christophe Declerck (Polaris) has opened today's special stage in the quad category; he started 39th of the bike-quad group as per schedule, at 11:17'30 AM and was followed 30" later by Argentine rider Sebastian Halpern (Yamaha).

016 - Verhoeven beats Helder by a tiny second at CP1

The first 10 bikes have just cleared CP1 (km 47)of today's special stage and it is now Dutch rider Frans Verhoeven (BMW) who is in the lead, leading by a tiny 1' in front of Portuguese rider Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha).

The first 4 bikes have cleared CP1 located on km 47 of today's special stage and it is Portuguese rider Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha) who has achieved best provisional time, 10" ahead of French rider Cyril Despres (KTM) and 23" ahead of Chilean rider Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez (Aprilia).

001 - It's a go for the last special stage of the 2011 Dakar!...

At the end of yesterday's stage 12, 205 vehicles - 94 bikes, 14 quads, 57 cars and 40 trucks - were granted permission to start today's 13th stage. It is the leader in the general standings, Spanish rider Marc Coma (KTM), who opened the stage at 10:40 AM as per schedule. He was followed 2 minutes later by French rider Cyril Despres (KTM).

Route change...

Due to the heavy rain that has been falling on the area for the last few days, the rally raid organizers have decided to change the route of today's special stage - although not its total length - in order to avoid some particularly "swampy" zones.

One last time before show-time...

An 826 km stage is on the menu for the competitors, but only 181 km will be timed, along the fast tracks of the Buenos Aires province.For all the competitors, the prime objective is to hold it together to avoid losing everything on this last special, the day before the arrival in Buenos Aires. Only a mechanical catastrophe could now deprive the leaders of their prize and they will all be looking after their machines until the finishing line of this special, which will take place on a small circuit near the bivouac for the delight of the many spectators expected.
