DARLINGTON, SC - If the IHRA's Pro Modified class can generate a fever, then 39-year old, professional chassis builder and driver Alan Pittman has certainly contracted the expensive, yet rewarding illness. The sophomore Pro Modified driver of the Westbrook Motorsports 1941 Willys finished tenth in the 2000 points standings and netted a quickest 6.250/225.99. Anyway you look at it; the former bracket racer is headed in the right direction.

"I'd like to think that we are," explained Pittman, who is partners in a chassis business with six-time IHRA World Champion Scotty Cannon. "I knew that the learning curve was going to be a steep one, but I think we climbed the hill well. Now that we've got one season under our belt, I know what to expect."

Pittman participated in this weekend's Majesty Homes Groundhog Warm-up presented by 1320 Web Services and while he wasn't attempting to rotate the earth, his objective was to get the team reacquainted with their routine. In other words, Pittman was looking to get back to his groove. Even though he won the event via a coin toss, the win is a rewarding one.

"Keeping your routine is a very important part of being successful in this class," added Pittman. "I know that from my days in bracket racing. I think a lot of the things that gave me the most problem was getting adjusted to running a supercharged car and how to make it consistent."

However, Pittman knows that car owner Ken Westbrook presented the opportunity of a lifetime to him.

"We have a great team," confided Pittman. "I think the thing that is great about Ken is that he does not elevate himself above all of us. He's one of us in the pits and he's not afraid to get dirty. It's all a team effort and that's what makes this deal work perfect. We've yet to secure a major sponsor, but I know that will come in time. In case anyone out there is reading this and needs a 225 mile per hour rolling billboard, we certainly can accommodate them."

So does Pittman ever consider holding back with his comments or on the racetrack?

He laughed and uttered, "I can't afford to, I'm a Pro Modified racer. Pro Modified racers aren't known for their reserved nature."

The next outing for the team will be the CompetitionPlus.com Spring Open hosted by Virginia Motorsports Park in Dinwiddie, Va.
