Floyd Cheek Arrives Late At Bradenton, Makes Impact All The Way To Winner's Circle

BRADENTON, FL--Sometimes when you're good, you're good. Former IHRA Pro- Stock World champion Floyd Cheek entered the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals a day late, but certainly not a dollar short. The former IHRA Pro Stock World Champion won a battle of former class titlists over Jon Yoak. It marked the first win for Cheek as a member of Charlie Hunt's two-car team.

Floyd started the weekend with a superb 6.727/206.75, good enough for the number three spot. What most did not know is that Cheek did not arrive at the racetrack until Saturday afternoon due to business commitments. Therefore, instead of being afforded four sessions, Cheek only made two qualifying runs to make the field. He finally settled into the number five slot with a 6.706/207.42.

The second hired gun driving for Charlie Hunt is former IHRA rookie of the year Tom Lee. Lee, started off the weekend's competition running a 6.764/203.89 good enough for the number six position after the first session. Lee picked up the pace in the final session garnering a 6.717/206.61,but still remained in the number six slot entering eliminations.

Charlie Hunt's team entered the first round of eliminations on opposite sides of the ladder, which meant they could have possibly met in an all Hunt team final, something that has never happned in IHRA Pro Stock. Cheek began the first round of domination by Team Hunt by carding a 6.770/205.90 laying away John Montecalvo's Citgo Monte Carlo. Cheek moved into the final with 6.76/205.64 defeat of Gene Wilson's Georgia based Thunderbird.

Tom Lee began his assault on the field by opening first round with a blistering 6.856/202.88 in defeating rookie driver Jeremy Bevins in Alvin Whaley's Ford Probe. Unfortunately for Lee his weekend ended in a semi final loss to former World Champion Jon Yoak's Ford Probe.

Cheek avenged his teammates loss. The Tennessee-based veteran put the hammer down with one of the best runs of the day carding a 6.762/205.85 paired with an equally impressive (.468) reaction time to win the 1999 Amalie Oil Nationals.

The next event for the Universal Brake Parts team will be the IHRA Holley Spring Nationals in Rockingham, N.C., April 9-11. Cheek and Lee, along with the rest of the Pro Stock contingent, will take assualt on the Rockingham International Dragway racing surface for the third race on the IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Series. Qualifying will begin with two sessions on Friday, followed by another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated to begin at noon on Sunday.
