BUDDS CREEK, Md. - If longevity provides for future success, then Larry Plummer has prepared for his success for a long time. The longtime drag racer from Pasadena, Md., could do no wrong as he fought his way through a tough contingent of competitors participating in the LIZZARD Racing Engines Top Sportsman Quick Eight at the CARQUEST President's Cup Nationals in Budds Creek, Md. If the Quick Eights are a training ground for the future of Pro Modified, then Plummer's nitrous-injected, 1963 Corvette has him headed in the right direction.
Plummer, the auto mechanic, who developed a reputation over the years behind the wheel of fast open-bodied machines, qualified in the second spot and went on to defeat top qualifier Mark McHugh in the final round.
This marked Plummer's first victory on the tour in 2001.
Eliminations opened with the third qualifier and past event champion Billy Farmer overcoming a slower reaction time to defeat Joe Buckley's supercharged entry. Buckley's entry got out of shape right out of the gate as local favorite Farmer went on for the win with a 6.811/210.37.
Plummer began his march to the finals by blasting out a 6.492, 214.72 that was more than enough to take the measure of Patrick Doherty, who turned in a 6.587, 212.03.
McHugh's first victim was the unique Saturn of New Yorker Paul Rocco. Rocco was the quicker of the two off of the line, but McHugh's potent '57 Chevy stormed by for the win with a 6.565, 213.43. Rocco gave it a valiant effort with a 6.693, 203.46.
Allan Juhasz nailed Frank Gugliotta on the starting line with a .406 light, but it proved to be overkill as he stormed to a 6.659, 208.46. Gugliotta absorbed the loss with a 13.686, 53.54. To add insult to injury, Gugliotta suffered a nitrous explosion about 100 feet out.
The semis opened with McHugh knocking off Farmer's classic Corvette. When Farmer broke on the burnout, McHugh soled with a 10.120, 86.11.
On the other side of the ladder, Plummer took a solo as well when Juhasz failed to make the call. Plummer scored the win with a 6.542, 213.81.
The final was a bit anti-climactic as McHugh left before the tree was activated. That enabled Plummer to score the win with a 6.538, 213.70.
