BUDDS CREEK MD - SUMMIT FastNews - Jay Turner in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley, Troy Critchley in Pro Mod, Jimmy Rector in Big Daddy's BBQ Funny Car, Tom Lee in Sunoco Pro Stock and Neal Parker in Super Eliminator led second day qualifying at the ExpressAutoParts.Com President's Cup at Maryland International Raceway. Turner took the lead spot Saturday afternoon with a 6.539/211.96, topping the quickest Nitro Harley field in IHRA history. Turner then stood on his time and declined to come out for the evening session, leaving Johnny Mancuso and Bill Furr the only qualified Harley's making a pass in the darkness. John Russell, Jamie Emery and Tony Mattioli also made runs during the "Night of Fire" but remained non-qualifiers. The Pro Mod field was met by native-American Johnny Rocca in full Indian regalia for the evening session, trying to "spirit" his Troy Critchley piloted 'Ironhorse' to set a new world speed record to pair with the 6.227 World e.t. record he'd set in the afternoon session. However, Critchley did not back up the 225.82 afternoon speed and will have to be satisfied with one-half of the Pro Mod world record. He remains number one qualifier. Fred Hahn stepped up and qualified second at 6.299/222.22 in the Jim Oddy-prepared 'Black Mariah' Corvette and must be considered a contender on Sunday. Quain Stott, first-time winner at Rockingham last week, was a surprising non-qualifier, effectively ending his championship hopes.
Jimmy Rector also chose not to appear Saturday night, letting his 5.876/237.34 stand as number one Funny Car qualifier and picking up the $1000 quickest qualifying award from Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce. Von Smith came from outside the field to second at 5.950/233.68. Local favorite Bunny Burkett, Sterling Va., qualified 8th at 6.047/231.40, thrilling her fans with spectacular burnouts and consistent performance. Tom Lee retained number one qualifying position in Pro Stock with the 6.609/209.75 he recorded Friday night. Saturday evening's session provided the run Lee needed to back that run up as the IHRA World e.t. record within one-percent. John Montecalvo was second at 6.640/208.52 in the Citgo Chevrolet. Neal Parker, of Millville, NJ, obliterated the rest of the Super Eliminator field with a 5.967/234.04 pass Friday evening. He also established a new IHRA S/E World E.T. record at 6.056, stealing it from Laurie Cannister's possession after only one day. Cannister qualified second in the Nicorette/NicoDerm CQ dragster at 6.070/221.92. Usual suspects Larry Snyder and Dave Price qualified third and fourth respectively. Todd Goodman appeared to work out the 'Whoop Ass' team's gremlins and qualified 11th. Mike Swinarski became the quickest IHRA Top Sportsman car in history when his blown 1968 Camaro ran 6.488/211.23 in the final qualifying session Saturday afternoon. Billy Farmer had already lowered the e.t. record for nitrous Top Sportsman cars with a 6.509/216.51 in the second round. Swinarski is number one qualifier, Farmer number two. Swinarski won the "Night of Fire" Holbrook Tool Top Sportsman Quick 8 event Saturday night, meeting Mark Nielsen in a wall-to-wall pedaling contest. Swinarski managed to get to the finish line first with a 7.035/177.30 over Nielsen's 8.320/125.96. With the fields set, Sportsman eliminations begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Pro eliminations begin at noon.
