Tommy Mauney Drops Tough Match Opposite Harold Martin In First Round

BUDDS CREEK, MD. -- Sometimes there are weekends that dictate that no matter what a person does, nothing is destined to go right. Thus was the case at the EXPRESS Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals in Budds Creek, Md., when Team Jeg's driver Tommy Mauney encountered some rough waters in qualifying and that spilled over into eliminations, where he dropped a tough match opposite the AC-Delco Pontiac of Harold Martin.

Qualifying started out great for Mauney. The veteran driver got off to a good start with a 6.440/219.26 during the first qualifying session. Not being one to rest on his laurels, the two-time World Champion came back and improved with a 6.40/219.

Mauney failed to improve, but ran a 6.50/212.90. The run was not enough to improve on the previous evening's effort, but provided a great example of race day conditions. His final attempt afforded him no reprieve as he lifted for a 6.78/180.40. He completed qualifying as the seventh quickest and was scheduled to face the Pontiac of Harold Martin in the first round.

Both drivers had tremendous starting line launches, but Mauney drifted out of the groove and that provided enough of an advantage for Martin to sneak by for the win.

Tommy Mauney, winner of the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradenton, Fla., plans to conclude his 1999 championship conquest at the IHRA Mopar Parts World Finals in Shreveport, La., during the weekend of Oct. 15-17. Mauney, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday.
