Millican First After Two Qualifying Sessions at IHRA Northern Nationals

Martin, Mich. - August 13, 2004 Three-time IHRA Top Fuel Champion Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing holds the number one qualifying spot after two qualifying rounds at the IHRA Northern Nationals at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Following the first qualifying session Millican held the number five spot, but moved into first after the second session, setting a new track record in elapsed time with a 4.685 second pass down the quarter mile track. He narrowly missed breaking his own track record for speed, going 307.16 mph. His record is 308.92 mph.

[readytolaunchcayuga.jpg] "I'm looking forward to making one more strong qualifying run tomorrow and then hopefully making it through three rounds of eliminations," said Millican.

Saturday's schedule of events includes one more Top Fuel qualifying session at 11:00 a.m. ET, followed by eliminations beginning at 6:00 p.m.

At last year's Northern Nationals Millican made history by becoming the winningest Top Fuel driver in IHRA history with his 26th career victory, eclipsing "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' record of 25 wins. Millican has since become the winningest IHRA driver in any professional category, with a total of 35 wins. He will look to get his sixth victory of the 2004 season and the 36th of his career in Saturday's eliminations.

Millican currently holds the top spot in the IHRA Top Fuel points standings. His nearest competitor, Bruce Litton, trails Millican by 190 points. Litton has finished second to Millican in the Top Fuel points totals the past three years.
