Millican Qualifies First at IHRA Spring Nationals
Sets New Rockingham Dragway Track Records

Rockingham, N.C. - April 24, 2004 - Three-time IHRA Top Fuel Champion Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing qualified in the first position at the IHRA Spring Nationals at the Rockingham Dragway, setting new track records in both elapsed time and speed. [Clay_new_uniform.jpg]

Millican's best qualifying run came on Friday night, when he blasted down the quarter-mile strip with an elapsed time of 4.550 at 317.42 mph, both new track records. Millican held the previous track records in both categories, with a 4.566 e.t. and a speed of 316.15 mph.

"I'm looking forward to racing here tomorrow," said Millican. "This is, without a doubt, a place loaded with history and I love racing here."

The former forklift driver from Drummonds, Tenn., will face number eight qualifier Bobby Lagana, Jr. in the first round of Sunday's eliminations, set to begin at 1:00 p.m. ET. The Top Fuel field of eight drivers is the quickest in IHRA history, as all eight cars qualified with elapsed times of 4.87 or better. [Werner_car1.jpg]

In Sunday's finals, Millican will attempt to tie the record for the all-time winningest driver in IHRA history in any professional class. The current record-holder is Rickie Smith, who has a combined 32 wins in Pro Modified and Pro Stock. Smith is competing in the Pro Modified class at the Spring Nationals, and if he wins in the finals, it could put a hold on Millican's plan to tie the record.

Millican is currently in first place in the IHRA Top Fuel Points standings, with second-place driver Bruce Litton 32 points behind. In his last race, the IHRA Texas Nationals in San Antonio, Millican set new track records in both elapsed time and speed at the San Antonio Raceway. In eliminations, he defeated Rick Cooper and Todd Paton en route to an uncontested final round, as fellow finalist Litton was transported to a hospital after his semi-final win. Litton's Top Fuel dragster hit the wall after defeating Grant Flowers.

Millican became the winningest IHRA Top Fuel driver in 2003, when he surpassed Don Garlits' 24-year-old mark of 25 wins. He currently has a total of 31 career IHRA wins in less than five full seasons of IHRA competition.
