Two-time IHRA Top Fuel Champion Clay Millican looks to tie Garlits' Record
Chicago - Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing, the 2001 and 2002 IHRA Top Fuel Champion, will race at the 2003 IHRA ACDelco Canadian Nationals in Toronto, Ontario, on July 25-27 at the Toronto Motorsports Park, where he is looking for his fifth IHRA victory in 2003, and his 25th career win.
A victory in Toronto will place Millican in a first place tie on the IHRA career Top Fuel wins list alongside "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. Garlits got his 25th career victory in 1979, defeating Connie Kalitta at the Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C. Should Millican break the record with 26 wins this season, the Team Werner/Lehman Racing crew plans to shave his head in celebration.
"Don Garlits was the drag racer of all drag racers, and our team has a chance to go out there and do what he did," said Millican. "Anytime you can break one of Big Daddy's records, you know you've done something very special. Our crew guys are working really hard and hoping to win the next two races so that they can shave my head when we break the record."
In his last race, the Motor City Nationals in Milan, Mich., Millican defeated Bruce Litton for his fourth Top Fuel victory of the season. The two drivers met in nine finals rounds in 2002, with Millican winning all of them. At the 2003 Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton, Alberta, on June 27-29, Litton defeated Millican for the second time in his career, ending Team Werner/Lehman Racing's quest for a perfect season.
Prior to the race in Edmonton, Millican won the ACDelco Nationals in Richmond, Va., defeating NHRA regular John Smith in the finals. His other wins in 2003 came at the Mopar Canadian Nationals in Grand Bend, Ontario, and the Amalie Texas Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, where he set a new IHRA Top Fuel record with an elapsed time of 4.591 seconds.
Millican is the current IHRA Top Fuel points leader with 629. His nearest competitor, Litton, is 176 points behind.
