Pittman Heads Into Cordova With Confidence And Points Lead

CORDOVA, Ill. - Sometimes the best thing to refresh one's memory is to retrace their steps. Alan Pittman is not a man that likes to return to somewhere that he's been before, but when the objective is to regain the points lead, he doesn't mind whipping on the locals to remind them how he got there in first place.

Beware, Pittman never lost his Pro Modified mojo. He just put it in reserve mode.

"You can never be reserved and expect to make it in Pro Modified," explained Pittman, the winner of two of the first three events of the 2001 season behind the wheel of Ken and Sylvia Westbrook's supercharged 1941 Willys. "This class is like a barfight. You have to find the biggest ones and knock them out first. The only problem is, you never know who the biggest one is. They are all big."

After losing early in Dinwiddie and a major Pro Modified exhibition in Bristol and then failing to make the cut in another exhibition in Commerce, the 40-year old, chassis builder from Pelzer, S.C., roared back. He qualified tops and went on to win the recently completed IHRA Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals in Grand Bend, Ontario. Pittman added that the reports of his demise were greatly exaggerated.

"I don't think I ever left," Pittman confided. "You have to understand that some of these guys hit hard out here. They will take your edge for a little while. We are living on the edge - all of us are. When it comes your way, you have to take it when you can get it. I am a firm believer that any one of these Pro Modified qualifiers has the potential to jump up and grab a win on raceday. The prime example was Quain Stott in Grand Bend. He had all kinds of bad luck all weekend and then he jumped up on Sunday. He made it to the finals. You can never count any of those guys out."

While Pittman and his tuner Darren Mayer attempted to rotate the earth at times earlier in the season. Their new motto is to have just enough to win.

"We try to keep our nose clean and not get too greedy when it comes to eliminations," explained Pittman. "We do just enough to win and that is working out for us. We have enough to win and I'm not going to say that we have a lot of power left to win with. I think it is a matter of calling the right shots at the right time."

Mayer could very well be the recipient of the unofficial toughman award as he will be in attendance despite injured sustained in a 4-wheeler accident this past week. He reportedly suffered a broken wrist and injured hip, as well as numerous cuts and scratches.
