CORDOVA, Ill.--- Bruce Litton, took home the Top Fuel trophy defeating Paul Romine in an all Indianapolis final at the Amalie Oil Summer Nationals at Cordova Dragway. The win is Litton's second in three final round appearances this season on the IHRA Summit Racing Series.
However, the win was a costly affair for the two-time winner this season.
He was penalized twice under the new IHRA "Black Flag" as he wounded his engine once in qualifying and again in eliminations. His penalty tally left him minus a net total of ten points, a qualifying run and $500. The veteran driver of the Wix Filters/Top Dragster Driving Experience was plenty happy just to be in the finals.
"Mom said there would be days like this," laughed Litton. "Seriously, this was a rough weekend. I had no idea that we were going to win until they brought me the trophy and the TNN people came up to interview. I knew that I was going to lose a lot of points, so to compensate I knew I would have to win a lot of rounds."
Litton endured a tough two days of qualifying, failing to improve on his round one qualifying effort of 5.060-second elapsed time at 238.30 mph. After three rounds, Litton fell to number seven in the eight-car field.
Litton faced number two qualifier Clay Millican in the opening round of eliminations. The race was decided on the starting line as Litton used the starting line advantage to his favor, to reach the finish line just inches ahead of a quicker Millican. The margin of victory between the two was 0.012 of a second.
Litton took on Louie Allison in round two and quickly made his problems of runs prior disappear. The soft-spoken, enclosed trailer dealer reached the stripe first, clocking a 4.793/302.55 easily defeating Allison as his engine let go around the 400-foot mark.
Prior to the final round, Litton trailed his opponent Romine, in the IHRA Summit Drag Racing Series point standings.
Litton was ready, leaving the line 0.039 seconds ahead of Romine. It was a side-by-side race to finish line as Litton claimed the win 4.752/305.98 over Romine's quicker effort of 4.747/309.20.
Despite winning the event, Litton left with 23 fewer points than Romine. That deficit when added to the five point lead that Romine had going into the event, now has the IHRA's Most Improved driver of 1999 trailing in the points chase by 28.
The next stop on the IHRA Summit Racing Series is the CARQUEST Empire Nationals in Leicester, N.Y., July 14-16.
