CORDOVA, IL. - Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock points leader John Montecalvo, of Center Moriches, NY, had a pretty decent weekend going until he ran into fellow Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver Ron Miller. Montecalvo qualified his Citgo-sponsored Chevy in the number four spot with a mark of 6.688, and was well positioned to attack the other 15 cars in the highly competitive mountain-motored IHRA Pro Stock field.
Montecalvo, who finished third overall in 1999, has qualified sixth or better in the four IHRA National Events this year, and gone to the final round twice. Today's result is his second quarter-final finish in the four races. His points lead may be up for grabs at the present time, but will not likely be out of his possession for too long.
In the first round of eliminations, Montecalvo cut a fantastic 0.405 light to take out Carl Baker's Ford, much to the delight of the Chevy fans in attendance. Round two was a different story, however, as number five qualifier Miller lined up opposite Montecalvo, and took a 0.086 advantage off the line. Montecalvo did his best to run his opponent down, but his staring line deficit and a pass of 7.028 couldn't quite get the job done against Miller's 6.689.
"It was not one of our best runs, for sure," said Montecalvo after the race. "We've been clocking 6.60's all weekend, and then run a 7.0 when all the marbles are on the line. It's just one of those things, I guess. It's frustrating, but we're still in good shape, and we'll be back after it in New York. This is just one stumble and we have plenty of season left."
