Team Castellana Ready To Climb Out Of Quicksand And Jump To Front Of Pro Modified
CORDOVA, Ill. - Mike Castellana had every intention of getting a running start on the Pro Modified championship by testing extensively at the end of a dismal 2000 season. He even increased the firepower in his arsenal by bringing aboard veteran nitrous guru Shannon Jenkins, a two-time World Champion and putting him behind the wheel of a second team car. They burned the midnight oil of preparation and tested everywhere they could and laid down some impressive 6.2-second runs.
Shortly after that, the worst thing that could have ever happened - happened. The season started. And ever since, the Westbury, N.Y.-based, supermarket chain store owner and his engine building teammate from Tuscaloosa, Ala., have been sinking in the quicksand, better known as the Pro Modified points standings. It's time for a change and Castellana is adamant about that.
Castellana, who was at a loss for words and wanted to get as far away from the sport after failing to make the cut at the recently completed IHRA Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals in Grand Bend, Ontario, decided to fight fire with fire. Both of his machines spent quality time in the chassis shop to exorcise gremlins and have fared well in Darlington test sessions this week. He's ready for the Amalie Oil Summer Nationals challenge.
"We have had a tendency to do well in test session and then flop at the national events," explained Castellana. "I don't see that is going to be the case here in Cordova. I think we have righted our wrongs and we might just have our stuff together for this weekend. This is a temperamental sport, one day you can be on top and the next you can be struggling for your existence."
He continued, "Cordova is usually an event that favors the nitrous cars, so maybe this might be our homecoming. I have my fingers crossed."
