Pro Stockers Seek New Zone To Do Battle, Fans Expect 6.50s At IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals!

DARLINGTON, SC--- The IHRA is proud to play host to the quickest Pro Stockers in the world. Further pleasing to the Norwalk, Ohio, based sanctioning body is that these cars are on the verge of breaking into the 6.5 second zone. Expect the 6.646 world record by Chevrolet racer Steve Speiss to endure a serious assault during next week's IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals at Darlington International Dragway. The high-profile, Stu Evans Ford Team has already went as quick as a 6.62 in unofficial testing during a preseason event at Houston Raceway Park and expects to post one of the most formidable challenges.

Darlington International Dragway has been a hotbed of barrier smashing performances for this division. Veteran Pro Stock driver Harold Denton was the first six-second, Pro Stock driver during a 1991 event. Earlier in the season, Rickie Smith surpassed the 200-mph mark at the Winter Nationals.

The Pro Stock division is drag racing's equivalent to a Winston Cup entry. Cars must adhere to a template and unlike other sanctioning bodies (which have a 500-cid limit), the IHRA allows their entries to shoehorn as large as 815 cubic-inches of engine into a 2,375 pound (including driver), American made car of 1994 or later design. No nitrous oxide is allowed.

The IHRA refers to the behemoth powerplants in their factory hot rods as "mountain motors". They were first introduced in 1977 and maintained an unlimited cubic-inch format. This popular program attracted such names as Ronnie Sox, Warren Johnson and the late Lee Shepherd over the years. The concept was abandoned briefly during a change of IHRA ownership in 1988, but was readopted again in its former standing three years later.

At least Forty of this breed of fast full-bodied cars are expected to make the trek to Darlington for the IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals next week. A full slate of professional and sportsman drag racing is on tap for the 27th annual, IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals and will feature the traditional, Saturday "Night Of Fire" comprised of fire-spewing Top Fuelers, wheel-standers, two jet dragsters and the "Super Shockwave", a jet- powered 1957 Chevy truck. The evening will culminate with a massive fireworks show. Darlington and the IHRA, keeping with their family friendly pricing for national events, offers a $20 daily ticket that includes free parking and a pit pass. Children (ages 6-12) are admitted for only $5 per day. A 3-Day Super Pass is available.

The IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals hosts three days of championship drag racing scheduled for March 12-14. The first two days are reserved for qualifying and preliminary eliminations. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, March 14. The track is located six miles west of Darlington on Hwy 151.
