IHRA drivers and officials to tour Shaw Air Force Base

SUMTER, S.C. -- Four International Hot Rod Association stars will showcase their race cars at a special display on the grounds of Shaw Air Force Base Thursday, Oct. 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. IHRA drivers planning to attend include 1997 IHRA Snap-on Tools Top Fuel World Champion Paul Romine and his CARQUEST Auto Parts dragster; four-time IHRA Snap-on Tools Alcohol Funny Car champ Mark Thomas and his Ethanol Performs Dodge Avenger; 1949 Mercury 'Ironhorse' Pro Modified driver Johnny Rocca; and Pro Stock racer Carlton Phillips and his Pontiac Firebird. Romine, who has owned several vintage P-51s, is an avid pilot and is really looking forward to visiting the base. "It's always a lot of fun to go to military bases because the guys on our team are really into what they're doing there," Romine said. "As it turns out, the guys on the base are really into what we do, so it's a lot of fun to sit around and swap stories. "I know I'll be lobbying hard for a ride in a C-model F-16." The drivers are in town for the completion of the rain-delayed Snap-on Finals at Darlington International Dragway, Oct. 10-11. In addition, the four drivers and other IHRA officials and guests will be given a special VIP tour of the base. Some 5,500 enlisted soldiers occupy the base, as well as 1,000 local employees and 1,000 dependents. The base is world famous for the variety of aircraft it houses, including many F-16s. Shaw Air Force Base is located northwest of Sumter, S.C., off State Route 378-76.
