DARLINGTON, SC - Ed Hoover didn't know if he was going to be able to manage a top ten points finish last season. It's easy to understand why he felt that way. Halfway through the season, the Gilbert, SC.-based Pro Modified driver for Paul Trussell Motorsports had yet to win a round in competition. Frustration was at an all-time high.
The team nearly drove themselves crazy trying to pinpoint the problem and with a little help from the points leader Shannon Jenkins, they were able to pinpoint the problem. All of a sudden, this team that was on the outside of qualifying looking in going into session number four catapulted themselves to the top. In a twist of fate, Hoover went on to beat Jenkins en-route to winning the event. Jenkins never beat Hoover again in the 1999 season.
"I surely don't want to start the 2000 season like we did the 1999 one," explained Hoover, who is credited with winning the first-ever IHRA Pro Modified event in Darlington in 1990. "I think we have a great handle on what it is going to take in the upcoming season and we'll do our best to apply everything in a positive manner."
The upcoming IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals in Darlington could afford Hoover the opportunity to score his first win at his home track since that inaugural event. He reached the finals at the 1998 Southern Nationals at DID, but lost to Scotty Cannon in the final round.
The team will make their 2000 season-opening national event debut at the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals this week, March 9 -11 in Darlington, SC. The event will be televised on TNN.
