Pontiac Driver Captures Fourth Victory of the Season
LAS VEGAS, Sept. 11, 2005 - Pontiac driver Ron Lummus broke his own national record for elapsed time in the HOT ROD category en route to his fourth win of the season at this weekend's NHRA Sport Compact Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Anaheim, Calif., driver entered today's eliminations with his ECOtec-powered Garret Turbo Pontiac qualified No. 1 for the sixth time this season, and he went on to defeat Mike Crawford's Dodge in the finals with a national-record performance of 7.826 seconds at 184.57 mph as Crawford broke on the starting line. Lummus held the old elapsed-time standard of 7.830 seconds.
In Round 1 Lummus defeated Myles Bautista in a Honda with an elapsed time of 8.092 seconds at 156.23 mph and continued to improve each subsequent round en route to his record-setting performance in the finals. He was unopposed in Round 2 and then defeated Stephanie Eggum in the semifinals with an elapsed time of 7.904 seconds at 178.45 mph to Eggum's 8.741 e.t. at 174.50 mph. Lummus's fourth win in eight final-round appearances this year extended his HOT ROD points lead over Crawford to 328 points.
In Pro RWD, Matt Hartford had his Summit Racing Chevrolet qualified No. 5 on the grid and advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual event winner Brad Personett. Personett drove his Toyota to an elapsed time of 6.538 seconds at 215.68 mph to better Hartford's 6.699 e.t. at 199.91 mph. Personett's second consecutive victory gives him a 48-point lead over Hartford after 9 of 11 events on the NHRA Xplod Sport Compact Drag Racing Series.
Marty Ladwig qualified his Chevy Cobalt No. 2 in Pro FWD with an elapsed time of 8.188 seconds at 183.89 mph as Ed Bergenholtz set the pace with his first career No. 1 qualifier with a 7.719 e.t at 182.53 mph in a Mazda.
