GRAND BEND, Ont. - Troy Critchley enjoyed an outstanding weekend at the 2nd annual IHRA Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals held at Grand Bend Motorplex in Ontario. The Aussie driver rebounded from a dismal outing at the last IHRA national event in Richmond to advance to the semifinals in his Ron Singleton owned entry.
Critchley was hot right out of the box in Singleton's Chevrolet-powered '41 Willys, posting a 6.355 at 220.96 mph during the opening round of qualifying on Friday. Critchley then guided the supercharged Willys to an amazing 6.294/220.10 during the "Night of Fire" to secure the No. 6 qualifying position going into eliminations.
Critchley faced the '68 Camaro of Alabama's own Shannon Jenkins in round one on Sunday. Unfortunately, Mother Nature dropped moisture on the Grand Bend Motorplex before the completion of the first round of Mopar Pro Modified. After a delay of over four hours the first round was finally completed. Jenkins left the line very early and suffered a red light, handing the win to Critchley. The Aussie got out of shape and shut off early, coasting to a 7.157/150.90 mph.
Despite the off pace run, Critchley would still enjoy lane choice in the second round against his former boss Johnny Rocca and his new driver, Paul Athey. The match up never materialized as Athey broke before the burnout, handing the win to Critchley. The Ron Singleton owned ride thundered to a 6.292/220.15 to advance to the semifinals, where he would have lane choice against Quain Stott.
The semifinals were decided on the starting line as Stott left first on Critchley with a .440 to .495 reaction time. The pair were glued together all the way down the track and at the finish line Stott took the win with a 6.313/221.51 to Critchley's quicker 6.309/221.18.
Despite the semifinal round defeat, it was an excellent weekend for the Australian born driver, and there is no doubt he will be a force to be reckoned with the rest of the 2001 season.
