Mancuso Has Scary Moments At IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals

DARLINGTON, SC-- John Mancuso provided his fans with a little more excitement than they bargained for during the completion of the IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals in Darlington, SC. The veteran Harley-Davidson dealer from Houston, Tx., encountered a combination of tireshake and smoke, which forced him left into the guardrail. He was uninjured in the mishap and suffered minor damage to his Top Fuel Harley.

Mancuso initially clicked off a 6.881/211.79 to end up in the seventh spot in qualifying during the initial March date. During the courtesy time trial prior to eliminations, he could only hopelessly hold on as his scoot rattled the tires and eventually spit off the blower belt.

He was paired opposite Doug Vancil in the first round. His foe outreacted him and it was the 60-foot mark that spelled doom for Mancuso. A trail of tire smoke caused him to drift out of the groove and to the left. He struck the guardrail at an estimated 100 mph, but managed to correct and coast the duration of the race course. The only damage to Mancuso's bike was a broken foot peg.

Mancuso plans to run a 19-race schedule for 1999 and likewise plans to defend championships earned under both the IHRA/Screamin' Eagle Banner and ADBA sanction. He continues his 1999 IHRA/Screamin' Eagle title defense at the IHRA Amalie Summer Nationals in Cordova, Ill., June 18-20. Each contestant will be afforded three qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest eight bikes will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
