Montecalvo Races To A Spot In Record-Setting Pro Stock Field At IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals

DARLINGTON, SC-- It was only two years ago that former IHRA racer Richie Stevens held the IHRA Pro Stock record with a 6.71. If a racer didn't have at least a 6.712 at the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals, he went sent packing at the conclusion of qualifying. John Montecalvo had the choice to be a follower or a leader. He chose the latter. The veteran Pro Stock racer from Center Moriches, N.Y., slipped into the top half of the program.

Montecalvo came out for the IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals on a crusade for a victory. After the first session of qualifying, he was third quickest with a 6.70/205.66. He improved during the second session with a 6.66/207.91 and fell one spot to fourth. Montecalvo failed to improve during his final two attempts and ended up in the fifth spot of the sixteen car field.

Final eliminations have been postponed until May 8, due to rain. Montecalvo and his Citgo-sponsored Chevrolet are slated to do battle against Chuck Demory in the first round.

The next event for the Citgo team will be the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradenton, Fla., on March 26-28. Montecalvo, along with the rest of the Pro Stock contingent, will take assualt on the Desoto Memorial Dragway racing surface for the second race on the IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Series. Qualifying will begin with two sessions on Friday, followed by another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated to begin at noon on Sunday.
