LEICESTER, N.Y. - Once upon a time, Ed Hoover was a slump. If it indeed sounds like a fairy tale for the Pro Modified competition, the Columbia, S.C.-based driver of Paul Trussell's 1963 Corvette has no intentions of returning where he was earlier in the year. His performances dictate there are even better things in the future.

His recent semi-final finish at the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals is a testimony that Hoover is determined to be the best in the class.

"We had a good weekend," explained Hoover, who recently finished runner-up in Cordova. "There were some things that bit us in the semi-finals, but I was just happy to be there. Any time you can win a round against the guys we have in this class, you can always consider yourself lucky."

Hoover was determined to have a good outing at Leicester. The Pro Modified veteran admittedly missed the clutch on his first attempt and aborted the run. He made up for his first session shortcoming and rebounded with a 6.319, 223.28. Hoover ended the first day as the eighth qualifier.

Hoover had a feeling that the field on the second day was going to be a quick one at Leicester. He adjusted accordingly, but his first qualifying effort fell short with a 6.349. He didn't make the same mistake again as he blasted out a 6.276, 224.36. Hoover qualified seventh and had to face Steve Vick in the first round.

Hoover made quick work of Vick by outreacting and outrunning him with a 6.341, 218.44.

He then fired a huge shot in taking out Alan Pittman in the quarter-finals.

During the semi-finals, he matched up with eventual champion Shannon Jenkins. Jenkins was the quicker of the two off of the starting line, and Hoover was forced to play catch-up. When problems set in, Hoover was forced to lift.
