Cannon Falls Short In Northern Nationals Outing
STANTON, MI (August 2, 1998) - Just because you're the toughest one on the block, that doesn't insure that you're going to win all the fights. Five-time Pro Modified world champion Scotty Cannon found that out the hard way. The Cable TV magazine backed driver dropped a tough semifinal match against fellow Pro Modified pioneer Tim McAmis.
"I had a choice to make," explained Cannon. "I could have stayed in it and tried to win at all costs or I could have chose to shut her down when it got sideways. I chose the latter. It just wasn't my day to win, that's all."
Cannon, who was still smarting from a rules change limiting blower overdrive that essentially equated to a 12-percent horsepower decrease, never flinched in his bid to maintain status. He qualified #1 (6.405/218.09) and that paired him with Mitchell Stott in the first round. Scotty used a 6.48 to top Stott and later carded a 6.50 to obliterate Carl Moyer.
However, in the semifinals, his Eagle Racing Engines powered 1953 Studebaker made a move out of the groove and he was forced to lift allowing Tim McAmis to advance to the finals.
