Norwalk, post-race: Pro Modified driver, Chip King, missed making the show by less than four-hundredths of a second at the 24th annual IHRA Mopar Parts World Nationals held at Norwalk Raceway Park. The ultra-competitive IHRA Mopar Pro Modified class featured a 16-car field that was separated by a mere tenth of a second.
King, who hails from Semora, North Carolina, made his best run of the weekend during the opening round of professional qualifying on Friday. King drove his beautiful silver 2001 Dodge Avenger to a 6.402 at 221.09 mph to grab the No. 14 position on the ladder.
Unfortunately for King, his performance failed to improve during the next three rounds of qualifying. As the rest of the field stepped up during Friday's second qualifying session, King began to slide down the ladder. He ended the first day in the No. 20 position with hopes of improving on Saturday.
King returned to make two more qualifying attempts but was unable to negotiate enough performance to crack into the stellar field at Norwalk. The North Carolina racer wound up qualifying a disappointing 21st out of the 36 Pro Modifieds attempting to make the show.
The next event for King will be the NHRA U.S. Nationals held Labor Day weekend at Indianapolis, Indiana. He will return to the IHRA tour at North American Nationals in Epping, New Hampshire, September 7-9.
