NORWALK, Ohio - Sometimes someone just has your number. Such was the case for the Western Beef/ Team Castellana IHRA Pro Modified team during this weekend's Mopar Performance Parts World Nationals presented by Ethanol Performs at Norwalk Raceway Park. The defending IHRA Pro Mod World Champion Fred Hahn took out team leader/owner Mike Castellana in the first round, then took out team engine builder Shannon "the Iceman" Jenkins in round two.

The Westbury, N.Y., based team looked strong in qualifying, with the former World Champ Jenkins taking the No. 3 spot in the field that boasted 36 competitors trying to qualify for the 16 car field with a 6.267 second elapsed time at 221.71 mph in the team's nitrous oxide assisted '68 Camaro. Castellana got into the highly contested field of IHRA's premiere event in the eleventh spot with a 6.336 at 221.92 in the team's classic '57 Chevy Bel Air.

In round one, Castellana gave Hahn, the No. 6 qualifier all he could handle, taking a .443 to .476 holeshot, but couldn't hang on when Hahn just came around him with a 6.290 at 225.86 mph to Castellana's right-there 6.352 at 221.02 mph. Jenkins, recent winner of the CARQUEST Empire Nationals, kept the team's hopes alive with a 6.298 second blast at 221.85 mph to put away Alan Pittman in the first round.

Jenkins and Hahn squared off in the quarterfinals, with Jenkins having revenge on his mind. The pair put on one of the closest races of the day, with Jenkins taking the holeshot off the line. He could not hold off the Champ Hahn's 6.266 at 215.75 mph, however, to his own holeshot-aided 6.295 at 220.58 mph. The margin of victory was a mere .004 of a second, or roughly 16 inches at 220 mph.

The next event for the Western Beef/Team Castellana team will be in Epping, NH, for the Amalie Oil North American Nationals. There, both Castellana and Jenkins hope to improve on their showing this weekend. They also might have their eyes set on a certain Fred Hahn character.
