ROCKINGHAM, NC - With the bulk of media attention focused on the new wave of General Motors body styles, Mountain Motor Pro Stock competitor Dwayne Rice proved that the tried and true Pontiac Firebird still flies high. Rice, 30, of Grove City, Ohio, nailed down the top qualifying position after the first session of Pro Stock at the IHRA Holley Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto Parts in Rockingham, NC.

Rice was at the top of the class with a 6.711 elapsed time with a 205.76 mile per hour charge. To say the professional excavator, who calls drag racing his expensive hobby, is excited would be a gross understatement.

"This is an incredible feeling," explained Rice, who plans to debut a new Pontiac Grand-Am during the season. "I think we did very well on making our initial baseline call. We did very well on the opening portion of our run, but the newer vehicles have the advantage on the bottom end."

Rice warns that the newer body styles will have their day at the top.

"Those guys are going to have their day," he added. "There's still a learning curve associated with a project such as breaking in a new body style. That's why there will be extensive testing done before we bring it out in competition."

Rice credits an update on his Pontiac by veteran chassis builder Tommy Mauney with being a factor in his success.
