ROCKINGHAM, N.C.-Adding insult to injury pretty much sums up Ed Hoover's Pro Modified season behind the wheel of Paul Trussell's 1963 Corvette.
The 2000 IHRA Summit Drag Racing Series concluded this weekend and all that can be said is "Thank God it's over", followed by "You'll get 'em next year".
After winning the season-opener in his home state of South Carolina-in front of Dad, who rarely attends-Hoover began to anticipate what could be his best IHRA season yet.
Hoover suffered his first DNQ (did not qualify) during the rescheduled CARQUEST Autumn Nationals hosted by Rockingham Dragway. The event was postponed after one round of qualifying when torrential rains swept through the Carolinas.
Hoover re-entered the event as the fifth quickest with a 6.427 second elapsed time at 220.84 mph. A tidal wave of quicker ET's from his fellow competitors and Hoover's failure to improve his performance pushed the Trussell Brothers Corvette out of the program in round two.
In round three, Hoover's performance improved slightly (6.381/221.27) and he found himself back in the game; qualified and hanging on to the sixteenth spot in the sixteen-car field.
The last car down the track bumped Hoover out of the program, seventeenth. Veteran-driver and world champ, Rickie Smith, King, N.C., had just returned from his daughter's wedding in time to qualify.
Hoover's 2000 scorecard reads: wins: 1, semi-finals: 1, quarter-finals: 1, first round losses: 7, DNQ: 1.
His 2001 season reads: Gunning for the Pro Modified championship.
