ROCKINGHAM NC - SUMMIT FastNews -
Fred Hahn of Elma, N.Y., broke his own Rockingham Dragway track record Friday in the first day of qualifying for the inaugural CARQUEST Autumn Nationals, 10th of 12 events comprising the IHRA's Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series. Qualifying continues Saturday with the quickest drivers in five professional and nine semi-pro categories advancing into single elimination finals on Sunday.
Hahn, driving a 1954 Corvette replica, was clocked in 6.348 seconds, breaking the record of 6.372 seconds he set last April during qualifying for Rockingham's Holley Spring Nationals event. That performance gave the veteran Pro Modified driver a .055 cushion -- enormous by drag racing standards -- over second qualifier Tommy Gray of Baltimore, Md. (6.403 seconds). Troy Critchley of Leesburg, Va., was third at 6.426 seconds. Hahn, who made only one qualifying attempt Friday, was not credited with a speed because of a malfunction in the timing system. The unlimited Top Fuel dragsters, the most powerful of all drag racing vehicles, will make their first qualifying runs at 12 noon and 7 p.m. Saturday. Favorites to claim the Top Fuel pole are two-time reigning IHRA World Champion Paul Romine of Indianapolis, Ind., four-time former champion Doug Herbert of Cherryville, N.C., current points leader Don Lampus of Dallas, Texas, and Bruce Litton of Indianapolis, winner of the spring race at Rockingham. Other first day qualifying leaders were John Montecalvo of Center Moriches, N.Y., in Pro Stock; Frederick Tigges of Holbrook, Mass., in Funny Car; and two-time 1999 winner Jay Turner of Whitsett, N.C., in the Top Fuel Harley Davidson class. Turner was one of three Carolinians qualified among the quick eight in the Top Fuel Harley class. He was joined by 62-year-old Ray Price of Raleigh, who was fourth after the first day, and spring runner-up Steve Moore of Spartanburg, S.C., who held down the No. 5 spot ahead of eight-time world champ Jim McClure of Williamsburg, Va. A fourth Carolina rider, Bill Furr of Orangeburg, S.C., winner of the most recent event in the IHRA series at Epping, N.H., had a troubled first run and was outside the quick eight with two qualifying sessions remaining.
