ROCKINGHAM, NC (Sept. 18, 2000) -- With two events remaining in the 2000 IHRA Drag Racing season, less than a round of competition separates points leader Paul Romine from challengers Clay Millican and Bruce Litton. At this weekend's CARQUEST Auto Parts Autumn Nationals at Rockingham Dragway, Romine, along with Millican, Litton, and long shot Jim Head will be counting every point available as the title chase goes down to the wire. One faulty move and either of the three competitors will be out of contention.

"It's going to be an exciting finally two races for us and the fans," two-time IHRA Top Fuel champion Paul Romine said. "We had a nice lead, but two first round losses by us has tightened this battle. We need to go rounds this weekend and be consistent so we can be there in the end at Shreveport."

In the past, Rockingham Dragway has been a friendly facility for the CARQUEST team of Romine and crew chief Clayton Harris. In 1998 at then the NHRA Winston Invitational, Romine made it to the final round of that event and set a still career-best 4.660 elapsed time. Earlier this season Romine earned a semi-final finish at the IHRA Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway.

"Rockingham is the premiere facility in IHRA and the surface is second to none," Romine said. "It should be a driver and crew chief's race without the problems of a subpar track."

Prior to the CARQUEST Autumn Nationals, the CARQUEST team will be busy throughout the North Carolina market. Tuesday, Sept. 19th, Romine and the CARQUEST Top Fuel dragster will display at the CARQUEST Auto Parts store in Sanford, NC. Later in the day, Romine will appear at the dedication of Ray Price's Legends of Harley Drag Racing Museum in Raleigh, NC. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20th, Romine and the CARQUEST Top Fuel Dragster will visit the CARQUEST Auto Parts store in Rockingham on East Broad St. Romine will be joined by Scott Ray and the CARQUEST Pro Outlaw team.

In addition to Top Fuel, the CARQUEST Autumn Nationals will have five professional and eight sportsman classes competing for the elusive event crowns. The CARQUEST Autumn Nationals will feature the spectacular "Friday Night of Fire", with the final round of pro qualifying under the lights, two jet Funny Cars, the wheel standing "Paddy Wagon", the legendary 200 mph Jet Kenworth truck of Bob Motz and a giant fireworks display.

The CARQUEST Autumn Nationals will be contested under IHRA’s new Thursday through Saturday schedule, with the championship finals "under the lights" Saturday night.

IHRA and Rockingham offer fan-friendly ticket pricing in order to provide affordable, family entertainment. Adult General Admission tickets Thursday are $20 and Friday and Saturday they are $25. Children 6-12 are $5 for admission and all tickets include a FREE parking and pit pass.

Rockingham Dragway is located on US Highway 1, across from the North Carolina Speedway, 10 miles north of Rockingham, 75 miles south of Raleigh, N.C., and 80 miles east of Charlotte, N.C. For ticket information, call (910) 582-3400, or visit www.ihra.com.

The CARQUEST Auto Parts Autumn Nationals will air on TNN Oct. 1 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
