Weney Drops Tough First Round Match At CARQUEST Autumn Nationals

ROCKINGHAM, NC -- Sometimes a racer will lay their cards on the table and hope for the best hand. In Sunday's first round of eliminations, weather conditions differed from those during qualifying, and that greatly affected most team's performances, not to mention track conditions. Weney's gamble on the left lane proved to be a fatal blow to his chances of winning the event. The benefactor to his failed wager was newcomer David Burch.

During qualifying, he laid his best cards on the table. Weney opened qualifying with a bang in the first session. He hurriedly made it to the staging lanes for the initial attempt and never missed a beat in churning out the quickest lap of the session with a 5.985/234.37. He elected sit rest on his laurels of the day and did not run the second attempt.

Weney also sat out the third session in an attempt to conserve parts, resting on Friday's laurels. He came out during the evening session and failed to improve on Friday's run with a 5.99 lap. He claimed the third spot and was paired with Dave Burch in the first round.

During the first round, Weney had an opportunity to switch lanes, as did the pair before him. The veteran flopper pilot chose to stand on his decision and the unfortunate part is that he fell short opposite Burch. His 6.060/232.49 and a quicker reaction time was not enough to hold off Burch's quicker 6.017/233.52.

Weney next travels to the IHRA EXPRESS Auto Parts.Cm President's Cup Nationals in Budd's Creek, Md., Oct 1-3. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded a qualifying run on Thursday and Friday and two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday.
