ROCKINGHAM, N.C.-Shannon Jenkins did his best to give Mike Castellana something to cheer about on that long ride home to Long Island. The Alabaman nearly succeeded.
While Castellana had another painful qualifying weekend during the IHRA's annual CARQUEST Autumn Nationals, Jenkins flew the Team Castellana Pro Modified banner high, leaving upset victims in his wake during the march to yesterday's semifinals.
Jenkins, the No. 12 qualifier, nearly pulled off a huge shocker against Fred Hahn, who produced the quickest pass after two days of trials. Jenkins got a big jump off the starting line, winning the holeshot, .477 seconds to .506, but severe tire shakes ended the dream of another victory even though Hahn was all over the lane. The two-time Pro Mod champ lifted and settled for an elapsed time of 15.238 seconds at 60.51 mph to Hahn's 6.289/224.32 on Rockingham Dragway
The first two elimination rounds had Jenkins thinking of a second victory this season for Team Castellana. In the opener, Jenkins dispatched Quain Stott, 6.344/219.76 to 6.678 and 209.49 despite the No. 5 qualifier's starting-line edge. Next to fall was No. 4 Ed Hoover, 6.302 and 220.69 to 6.337/219.36. He also had the better holeshot, .458 to .466.
Heading into the first qualifying session on Friday, Jenkins was confident that his nitrous-injected Western Beef Camaro was going to make a stout run out of the box. Castellana wanted to find a comfort zone. Jenkins succeeded with his 6.325/291.61 blast, while the supermarket-chain owner from Westbury, N.Y., chattered the tires, coasting through the lights. Neither improved on the second run. Jenkins resided in seventh, while Castellana remained unqualified.
The focus on Saturday was to get the second Western Beef Chevy into the show. The first try saw Castellana rattle the tires, while Jenkins only produced a 6.36. In the evening, Castellana nailed the tires again and settled for another DNQ. Jenkins fared no better and finished as the 12th quickest.
Castellana and his sidekick Jenkins will make a fresh start this coming weekend at the 10th annual CARQUEST President's Cup Nationals from Friday through Sunday in Budd's Creek, Md.
