Romine sets track record, defeats Muldowney at Milan Dragway’s Night of Thrills

MILAN, MI (June 27, 1998) -- Shirley Muldowney may have had the home field advantage Saturday, June 27th at Milan Dragway’s Night of Thrills, but Paul Romine and his CARQUEST team had the performance advantage.

At the event held near Detroit, Romine, the reigning IHRA Top Fuel World Champion sweep the 3-time NHRA Winston World Champion and Armada, Mich. resident with two consecutive 4.8 second elapsed times. In their first meeting of the evening, Muldowney’s Action Performance dragster lost traction right off the starting line while Romine’s Clayton Harris-tuned dragster rocketed to a 4.85 second, 283.84 mile-per-hour victory. The 4.85 was new Milan Dragway Top Fuel track elapsed time record, breaking Muldowney ’s two year old 4.95 track record. Later in the evening the two World Champions again met and once again the win light illuminated in Romine’s lane, this time with a 4.87/287.90 popping up on the scoreboard to defeat Muldowney’s 4.98 at a faster 294.61.

“Any time you beat Shirley Muldowney, that’s an accomplishment,” said Romine after the event. “We’ve raced her and Rahn (Tobler, Shirley’s husband / crew chief) a lot this season and its been close racing each time. This particular weekend the results came out in our favor, but I’m sure she’ ll be going for our throat the next time we meet at next month’s (IHRA) CARQUEST Northern Nationals in Stanton (Mich.).”

The two round wins by Romine at Milan pushes his record to 4-2 this season against Muldowney. He won 2 of 3 rounds against her in early May at the Legends of Drag Racing in Stanton, Mich. before the pink dragster won a round Memorial Day weekend at Norwalk Raceway Park’s CARQUEST Fox Hunt.

The next event for Paul Romine and his CARQUEST team is this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as they resume IHRA national event competition at the IHRA Summer Nationals in Cordova, Ill.
