Weney Continues To Reap Rewards Of Championship; Even In Tough Season

Royersford, Pa. - Scott Weney has had the exact opposite of fortunes this season as he did last year. However, he has a reason to smile on this day. The defending IHRA Funny Car champion was one of three drivers named as a finalist for the Alcohol Funny Car portion of the Car Craft Magazine All-Star Drag Racing Team.

Even though this season has been a disappointment, the multi-time IHRA national event winner has determined that every dark cloud has a silver lining.

"I would like to thank the readers of Car Craft magazine for voting me to such an honor," explained Weney. "I really hate that we haven't had the opportunity to aggressively defend our championship, but becoming a finalist for this has made up for a lot of it. Drag racing requires a lot of patience and it has been a test for me this season. We're going to head to Indy on Labor Day for the Car Craft Banquet with our mindset on winning."

Weney enjoyed one of his finest seasons during the 2000 season. Piloting the Ken Sheetz-owned Funny Car, the 42-year old Weney reached the final round seven times, winning three of them. Prior to this season, Sheetz disbanded the team, which left Weney without a ride in his championship defense season. He landed a ride at the start of the season in the Jackie and Judy Gibson-owned Pontiac Funny Car. The team opened the season by qualifying and going a few rounds in the first two events, but has been absent for the last three national event.

Car Craft Magazine established the All-Star Drag Racing Team concept in 1967. With input from competitors and fans, 28 drivers, mechanics, builders and sponsors will be honored with membership on the All-Star Drag Racing Team during an awards ceremony slated for the new Downtown Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis on Thursday evening, August 30th.
