Weney Reaches Semis At IHRA Holley Nationals, Drops Tough Encounter Opposite Smith
ROCKINGHAM, NC-- If only Pro Alcohol Funny Car racer Scott Weney and his arch-rival Von Smith could qualify on opposite sides of the ladder. In a rain-delayed, semi-final match at the IHRA Holley Spring Nationals in Rockingham, N.C., Weney lost in the second consecutive IHRA event to Smith. But, do not be deceived, Smith had to work for this win.
Weney paired against Smith in the first qualifying session and the two scored an impressive race. Weney out qualified Smith despite producing identical 6.030 elapsed times. The tale of the tape was a quicker mile per hour for Weney (233.28). He failed to improve during the Friday evening session, but remained in the early pole-position..
Weney covered the quarter-mile during the third session at Rockingham by running two miles. The veteran driver drifted out of the groove and made a beeline for the left lane retaining wall. He corrected and a 5.959/238.03 flashed on the scoreboards, which was nothing short of amazing. He came to the starting line with every intention of improving on his status, but was forced to abort with tireshake. He finished in the fourth position and faced James Libby in the first round of eliminations.
Weney easily topped Libby with a 5.996/237.34. He reached the quarters and matched with Dale Brand, who upset points leader Monty Todd in the first round. Brand strapped a holeshot on Weney and could only produce a 6.42/203.29. The veteran chassis builder quickly reeled in his foe and passed him for a 5.977/235.72 victory, which was the quickest run of the round.
When a severe thunderstorm halted competition until Monday morning, Weney and Smith were forced to run a delayed battle. Smith gained a tremendous starting line advantage and that was a defecit that Weney couldn’t overcome in a 5.91/238 to 5.94/238 decision. Weney next returns to the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C., on May 8 for the rescheduled event. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded a time trial early in the day with final eliminations slated for later in the afternoon. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA’s Drag Review magazine.
