Shannon Jenkins Motorsports 1997 IHRA Pro Modified Champion & World Record Holder The "Iceman" Cometh To Melt The Competition

Jenkins Proves To Be The Quickest Nitrous Pro Modified At The IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals!

DARLINGTON, SC-- During the offseason, Shannon Jenkins was penned as the man destined to lead the nitrous troops into battle. The soft-spoken, Alabaman let no one down as he emerged as the quickest nitrous qualifier at the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C. The former World Champion saved his best for last as rose to the second spot in the quickest-ever, Pro Modified field.

Jenkins was qualified 6th in the program going into that final session. With the header flames lurking from beneath the Parsons Brothers 1941 Willys, he covered the quarter mile with a 6.323 elapsed time at 218.44 miles per hour hour. The run was only .007 slower than his record-setting 6.316 lap at the 1999 World Finals in Shreveport, La.

With rain postponing the event until May 8, Jenkins will have to wait until then to face his first round foe. He is paired again former Pro Modified World Champion Tim McAmis in a battle of past Pro Modified titlists.

In other related Jenkins news, Billy Harper qualified in his first outing with a Jenkins motor. The Paducah, Ky., based racer ran a 6.456/215.37 in his 1968 Barracuda to secure the 11th spot.

Jenkins plans to continue his championship conquest at the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradenton, Fla., March 26-28. Jenkins, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of Drag Review.
