Shreveport Tommy Maunery Notes

SHREVEPORT, LA. -- Tommy Mauney likes to begin with a bang and go out with a bang. The end result is that there was a whole lot of banging going on in Shreveport, La., as the Jeg's Mail Order-sponsored, 1963 Corvette Pro Modified of Mauney blistered his way through the field at the Mopar Parts World Finals. The veteran chassis builder from Shelby, NC., emerged from the 16-car field as the quickest nitrous doorslammer on the grounds of the impressive Red River Raceway.

The win was one that he's had to work hard for. It marked his first since the season-opener in Bradenton, Fl., when he captured the Amalie Oil Nationals.

"We've chased some problems and it appears we found them," explained a jubilant Mauney, who is a two-time IHRA champion. "One we did, we knew exactly where to put everything into to place. It looks as if we succeeded on all count. Special thanks goes out to the family at Jeg's Mail Order and my own family back at home. There's a lot of people that contributed to this win."

Mauney became the quickest nitrous doorslammer in Pro Modified racing with a 6.306, which stood as low elapsed time of the event. He defeated such names as Tim McAmis, Shannon Jenkins and Mitchell Stott to make the final round against Al Billes.

Mauney, for the second time in 1999, beat a Canadian in the finals as he topped Billes by a 6.320/221.45 to 6.353/222.73 margin.
