Crawford, Donvan among Snap-on Finals sportsman winners

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Jerry Crawford of Ware Shoals, S.C. claimed the Top Dragster victory Saturday evening at Darlington International Dragway's rain-delayed second-annual Snap-on Finals. The race was the final event in the nine event IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Crawford outran Roy Holcomb in the final round matchup, but Holcomb, a Harrison Township, Mich. resident, used the runner-up finish to become the 1997 IHRA Snap-on Tools Top Dragster World Champion. He was one of seven different drivers to earn IHRA World Champion status in eight sportsman categories. Pat Donovan earned the Top Sportsman victory, edging Kenny Rucker at the finish line. Donovan, of Great Falls, Va., covered the quarter-mile in 7.36 seconds at 172.57 miles per hour in his 1988 Firebird to take the win. Lilburn, Ga.'s Ronnie Davis claimed the Top Sportsman World Championship after advancing to the quarter-finals. Danny Waters Jr. came away from the event with two trophies, posting wins in both Quick Rod and Hot Rod. Waters Jr., of LaGrange, N.C., ousted Steve Furr in Quick Rod and topped Kenny Myers in Hot Rod. IHRA World Champions in those categories are Spartanburg, S.C.'s Kevin Scales (Quick Rod) and B.D. Parker of Florence, S.C. (Hot Rod). In Modified, Clay Millican was the winner after Steve McCreary turned on the red-light. Millican, of Drummonds, Tenn., ran 7.34, 182.03 in his 1996 dragster. Richmond, Va.'s Anthony Bertozzi claimed his fourth straight Modified World Championship by making a quarter-final appearance. Greensboro, N.C.'s David Patrick won the 9.90-index Super Rod title over Kenny Floyd. Patrick drove his '68 Camaro to a 9.976, 120.32 run with a near-perfect reaction time. Floyd broke out with a 9.870, 131.50 in his '58 Corvette. Rusty Cook of Cynthiana, Ky. was the Super Rod World Champion. Paul Forte of Jacksonville, Fla. was the Super Stock winner, while defending IHRA Stock World Champion Curtis Smith took top honors in his category. IHRA World Champions in those two categories are Bertozzi (Super Stock) and Harold Gault, Pacolet Mills, S.C. (Stock).
