Racers targeting the 3.50 barrier for this weekend's Sealybration
SEALY, Texas - Eight of the top racers across the country are eying the 3.50 second barrier for this weekend's Sealybration race, the quickest and fastest race ever to be held at Lone Star Raceway Park this Saturday night. The event which will feature three-second, 200 MPH Top Alcohol and Nitro Dragsters, has many of the top racers in the area and country gunning for the $4,000 grand prize to the winner.
Last year's Sealybration Champion and drag race legend Gene Snow appears to be one of the favorites going into this weekend's race, posting a 3.55 1/8 mile time at a recent event in the heat of the day. Current track record holder Lee Callaway (3.66/204 MPH), of Baytown, Texas, also is eying the 3.50 zone.
"We have some new 'tricks' on the car," said Callaway. "It's definitely making some more horsepower, and we plan on doing a little testing on Friday. If we get it lined out, we should get the car into the 3.50's, and load up a few A/Fuel cars along the way. My dad asked me the other day what the payout was, and I told him all I knew was it payed $4,000 to win, and that's what I plan on doing."
Defending four-time Division 5 Champ David Wells, who is currently ranked No. 4 nationally, is making the trip all the way from LeMars, Iowa, in his Blue Bunny Ice Cream sponsored entry.
"We're looking forward to coming down and running this race," stated Wells. "It's a nice facility, and hopefully we can lay down some good numbers. We didn't make the trip down here to come up empty handed, though."
Among the racing action will be the heated rivalry between Callaway and Magnolia, Texas based racer Karl Brounkowski. Brounkowski is also known for his eighth mile burnouts.
"Callaway is always running his mouth," said Brounkowski. "We're going to show him the power of Nitro, and he's going to get a real good view of the back of my wing. By the end of the race, he'll be whining just like that blower of his."
The race will also mark the return of local racer and multi-time national event winner Troy Buff, who has sat out the past two seasons.
"We've parked our car in an effort to move up to Top Fuel," explained Buff. "When [event promoter] Will [Hanna] called me up, I talked it over with the family, and we all agreed it would be a fun race. So we put the car back together, and I look forward to getting back in the seat. It's been a while, but when you've done it for a while, it's like riding a bike."
Other Top Alcohol racers to be on hand include James Thompson, Nick Copeland and Glen Woosley. The race will begin at 7:30 Saturday night with the one and only qualifying session. The quickest four racers from that session will be paired up in the semifinals at 9 p.m., and the winners of that round will meet in the final at 10:30 p.m. After the final round, the event will conclude with a spectacular fireworks show.
The Sealybration event is much more than a race, however. In addition to being the fastest race ever held, the event features a Fajita and Bean cook off Friday night, and BBQ cookoff Saturday morning. An Arts and Crafts show will also be on display Saturday morning. Adult admission is $20, children under 12 are $5, and students and seniors receive a $5 discount.
