Stanton Report- Day 1 Qualifying Reports From The IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals

Top Fuel

Bruce Litton-- Litton will make his qualifying runs on Saturday per IHRA procedures that have limited the nitro-burning dragsters to two qualifying attempts.

Top Fuel Harley-Davidson

John Mancuso-- Mancuso was no different than any other Top Fuel Harley team when it came to the first qualifying session. He smoked and rode a wheelstand, managing to post a 7.649/144.16. He ended up in the seventh position.

Pro Funny Car

Scott Weney-- Fresh off of a new world record run at Leicester, Weney opened qualifying with a conservative 6.235/225.63 that placed him in the seventh spot after the first session.

Von Smith-- Smith opened qualifying with a great 5.991/231.99, which was good enough to secure the early lead in qualifying after the first session.

Pro Modified Wally Stroupe -- Stroupe got off to a better start than he did at the last event in New York. He produced a 6.626/213.20 during the first session to settle into the ninth spot. The second attempt offered no improvement.

Johnny Rocca/Troy Critchley-- Critchley opened qualifying with a driving show that pushed to the very edge of the envelope. The Australian snaked the '49 Mercury over the right lane before lifting and coasting to a 7.46/140. He was on the outside looking in after the first session. The second attempt improved their position with a baseline 6.83/205.55.

Mike Castellana-- Castellana had problems in the initial session of qualifying. It was apparent that he came to the line with more horsepower than the tricky racing surface could handle. On the second attempt, he made it further on the with a 7.41/117.48.

Dale Brinsfield-- Brinsfield opened his event in Michigan with the same attitude that he displayed at New York. He stormed down the Mid-Michigan Motorplex racing surface for a great baseline 6.592/211.99. This run put him in the sixth spot at the end of the session. Although he failed to improve, a 6.62 in the second session wasn't a bad lap by any means.

Shannon Jenkins-- After not competing at Stanton last season, Jenkins returned in impressive fashion for 1999. He produced the quickest run of the first session with a 6.564/210.77, which put him in the top spot going into the Friday evening session. His work was far from done in the second session as he improved with a 6.53/215.41.

Ed Hoover -- Hoover's goal in early qualifying was to remain in the top half of the program. He reached his objective as his 6.612/211.62 was enough to slip him into the eighth spot. The veteran driver failed to improve during the second session, but maintained pace with a 6.649/211.83.

Tommy Mauney-- Mauney was unable to make any runs on Friday because he was unable to arrive in Stanton. Sources report that he had transporter problems which delayed his departure from home. The vehicle was replaced and the new mount had similar problems. He is expected to arrive early Saturday morning.

Pro Stock

John Montecalvo-- Montecalvo opened qualifying with the strongest baseline run of any of the Chevrolet Pro Stockers in attendance at Stanton. He used a 6.877/203.16 to slip into the third spot of the sixteen car field after the first session. A tricky left lane offered no improvement for the second attempt as he aborted the run and coasted to a 10.23.

Charlie Hunt Racing-- The Fords of Charlie Hunt opened qualifying in the first session with mixed results from the 100-degree weather. Floyd Cheek was the quicker of the two with a 6.895/202.73 and that gave him the sixth quickest time. Tom Lee didn't fare as well as he could only muster a 7.281/201.97, good enough for the 15th spot. Lee stepped up in the evening session and recorded a 6.94/202 to move a few spots to 11th. Cheek was unable to improve and rested on his earlier laurels.

Super Eliminator

John Long -- Long opened qualifying with a 6.91/195.51 in the new car, but his run was disallowed when the car came up light at the scales. He continued his improvement with a 6.848/191.05 which ended his first day of qualifying in the 15th spot.

Larry Snyder-- Snyder returned to familiar territory in the first session of qualifying as he ascended to the top spot with a 6.369/213.64 after the first session. He failed to improve during the second session and managed to retain the top spot.
