Stewart aiming for Championship with Caliber Collision Centers
ARLINGTON, Texas - NHRA Competition Eliminator driver Charlie Stewart has his eyes set on the 2002 Championship with the renewed backing of Caliber Collision Centers for this season. Stewart, a perinnial heavy hitter in Division 4, will field a two car team at select events this year. With three race-ready cars in the team's stable and horsepower supplied by McClintic Racing Engines, Stewart is confident of his chances this season.
Stewart, who is from Arlington, Texas, is no stranger to running for a World Championship. In the early '90's, Stewart put a then up-and-coming Scotty Richardson in the seat, who went on to win one of his now five World Championships that year.
After signing with Caliber in the middle of last year, he immediately showed results by going to the finals of the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals in Denver. He also won the Topeka Division 5 event last year as well.
"We are very pleased to have Caliber Collision Centers involved in a big way with our team for the 2002 season," said Stewart. "Our first race will be the Winternationals, which is right by their corporate headquarters in Irvine. I'm really excited about it; it's going to be a great way to kick off the season."
"It is going to keep my team on the road," added Stewart. "It is going to allow us to run ten nationals and ten divisionals; that's the gameplan. That's more races than we can claim points, but there's no substitute for seat time."
After campaigning primarily A Econo and B Dragsters during his career, Stewart will also run a B/Altered Automatic and C/Econo Dragster, with veteran drivers Greg Hogue and Jeff McClintic switching off duties in the team's second car.
"We're going to run a partial two-car team," stated Stewart. "We're going to go to Pomona and run A/ED, then switch over to B/AA, which is my new '63 Corvette at the Houston divisional. I'll probably run the C/ED whenever we get to a track that is not up to snuff as we'd like it to be. That's the direction we plan to head this season."
The '63 Corvette that Stewart will run this year will be a chassis and body that he will market to other racers this season.
"I currently build the bodies for the cars with my new company, C&S Bodies," stated Stewart. "I've been selling those to some of the chassis builders like Undercover, Mullis, Cameron, and Scotty Richardson. I am going to prototype a kit car, which is basically a Super Gas chassis and '63 Corvette body, which should be ready by the Houston divisional. I'm going to be running a Comp model all year myself."
Founded in 1991, with headquarters in Irvine, Calif., Caliber Collision Centers operates high-quality collision repair facilities in California and Texas. Caliber currently owns and operates 62 facilities and plans to continue acquiring, developing and integrating high-volume collision repair centers while providing innovative collision repair solutions and automobile physical damage claims support.
