Preview: DTM, heat 8: A1-Ring DTM Back into Action

The 2002 DTM goes back into action after a five-week summer break with the event at Austria's A1-Ring this DTM weekend. It's the second time the DTM races at the Grand Prix circuit in the beautiful countryside of Styria after Bernd Schneider (Mercedes-Benz CLK- DTM) won the race and his third DTM Championship title at the DTM premiere here last year.

The track: The A1-Ring is one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar, particularly for the engines. 70 percent of a lap are driven at full throttle, this is a record for DTM tracks, Nuremberg's Norisring with it's long straights has a full throttle part of 68. The hairpin at the end of the long uphill straight is good for spectacular outbraking manoeuvres.

Bernd Schneider (Vodafone AMG-Mercedes):

"I'm looking forward to the A1-Ring. The track is challenging for drivers and cars, and the bumpy corner approaching the finish line is one to watch. Though this track doesn't look very spectacular, there are a few good places to overtake. I will do my best to keep the championship battle open until the DTM final at Hockenheim."

Statistics: Uwe Alzen's (Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes) victory at the Nürburgring five weeks ago was the third race win for Mercedes-Benz this year, after Jean Alesi (AMG-Mercedes) had won at Donington in May and Bernd Schneider claimed victory at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz in July. In the seven races so far, Bernd Schneider (EuroSpeedway) and Marcel Fässler (Warsteiner AMG- Mercedes/Donington) posted the fastest race laps.

Mercedes-Benz drivers achieved nine out of 21 possible podium finishes and 18 out of the 42 feasible points positions scoring 87 of 224 possible points.
