Like all the DTM drivers, Jean Alesi will be at Adria in Italy this week for the four-day ITR test session (18-21 March), the new circuit on the DTM calendar for the second round this year. It will be the first time all three manufacturers, Marcedes, Audi and Opel, will test together ahead of the new season.

"The DTM season draws on apace," Alesi told his official website. "(This) week, I will be able to conduct some more tests in the CLK at Adria, a new track near Venice. That is where we shall all be gathering on the 11th May for the second race of the championship. I've already received ten or so letters from fans who are dead-set on coming to see me, which is lovely."

Alesi was interested to watch his Mercedes CLK be built over the winter and his ideas were incorporated into the design. "For the first time, I was able to observe a CLK car be put together this winter," he said. "Whereas all F1 cars look pretty much the same, DTM enables each constructor to adopt their own philosophy."

"In this sense, my car cannot really be called a 'DTM car', but has to just be called a Mercedes. It's one of their real models. Also, it was designed with my suggestions having been taken into consideration, which will help me a lot this season."

Naturally, the former F1 driver did the same as many fans, and stayed up late last weekend to watch the Formula One season opener at Melbourne, Australia. He too was thrilled by the unpredictable action.

"What a race !" Alesi enthused. "What a Grand Prix ! Everyone who stayed up for it last Sunday (and I am one) did not regret it. I loved every moment of the race in Melbourne. There was action, drama and suspense right up until the finish-line -- that's how F1 is meant to be. I'm not stupid though: the change on the track was due more to the weather than the new regulations. Ferrari wanted to play it safe, and it didn't work this time."
