Jamie Green Second on the Grid
Bruno Spengler fifth ahead of Bernd Schneider
Mika Häkkinen eighth after accident

Jamie Green (Salzgitter AMG-Mercedes C-Class) will start Sunday's DTM première at Brands Hatch, England second on the grid. In Saturday's qualifying which had been interrupted after accidents of Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Audi A4 DTM) and Mika Häkkinen (AMG-Mercedes C-Class) Green posted a fastest lap of 42.654sec. Bruno Spengler (DaimlerChrysler Bank AMG-Mercedes C-Class) was fifth with a lap time of 42.740sec ahead of Bernd Schneider (Vodafone AMG-Mercedes C-Class) with a 42.771sec.

Exiting the last corner before start and finish, Häkkinen ran wide and hit the grass. He spun and hit the pit wall sideways. The Finn, who had posted only two timed laps at this time of the third qualifying part, ended up eighth on the grid.

In the qualifying's first part Green was fastest ahead of Spengler. Daniel la Rosa (Trekstor AMG-Mercedes C-Class) posted a 43.229sec and was the last to qualify fort he top-14 who moved up to the second part of qualifying. His gap ahead of 15th position was nine thousandths of a second. Stefan Mücke (TV Spielfilm AMG-Mercedes C-Class/43.292), Mathias Lauda (Second Hand AMG-Mercedes C-Class/43.443) and Susie Stoddart (Autoscout24 AMG-Mercedes C-Class/43.496) finished 16th, 18th and 19th respectively. All 20 drivers were within 0.955sec.

Green was fastest also in the second part of qualifying. Jean Alesi (stern AMG-Mercedes C-Class/43.223sec) ended up 12th ahead of la Rosa (43.166sec) and Alexandros Margaritis (EasyRent AMG-Mercedes C-Class/43.203sec.)

Jamie Green:

"I'm happy. In both the first parts of qualifying I was fastest and this is encouraging for tomorrow's race. A good grid position is crucial here, because overtaking is quite difficult. I look forward to my first DTM race on home soil."

Bruno Spengler:

"I'm quite disappointed because I had expected a better result. Since I was here the first time during the tests in March I have improved continuously. But this is a tricky circuit. In the race tomorrow the strategy and pit stops will play an important role; however, I fully rely on our team."

Bernd Schneider:

"I started my last run after the red flag very well and second place was possible. However, at turn three the car was sliding a bit and I lost valuable time."

Mika Hakkinen:

"I was going really strong, but when I exited the last turn I ran wide and hit the grass with one wheel. I tried to save the lap and kept pushing, but unfortunately I spun and hit the pit wall. I'm sorry for my team because of the extra work they have. With regarding what's happening on the other side of the ocean I keep my fingers crossed for the entire McLaren Mercedes Formula One team and a good qualifying result in a few hours."

Jean Alesi:

"It is fun to fight for positions at this circuit; unfortunately our speed today was not good enough for a better place on the grid. The spectators will experience a great show tomorrow because they can see almost the entire track. For the drivers it will be unusual, because there will be traffic everywhere."

Daniel la Rosa:

"I'm glad that I made it into the second part of qualifying the second time. Unfortunately I made a mistake at the last corner of what should be my fastest lap, otherwise a better result would have been possible."

Alexandros Margaritis:

"I am disappointed. The first qualifying was OK, but then I pushed to hard. Therefore my car suffered from oversteer and I was not able to improve."

Stefan Mucke:

"Due to a problem with the power steering in this morning's Free Practice I drove only seven laps. That's why I lacked a bit of experience with this track in the afternoon and I missed the second part of qualifying by seven hundredths of a second."

Mathias Lauda:

"I encountered a lot of traffic almost all the time, so a better time was impossible."

Susie Stoddart:

"Everything felt quite OK and the gap to the other 2004 cars isn't really big. I will push hard tomorrow to improve."

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, stays at the US Formula One Grand Prix in Indianapolis this weekend and follows the event in Brands Hatch from there.

Hans-Jürgen Mattheis, Managing Director HWA and Team Manager:

"The most important news first: Mika Häkkinen remained unhurt in his accident, and his car is not severely damaged. Jamie Green did a good job; in four races he has now qualified twice on pole position and twice in second place. He has a good basis for tomorrow's race."

"The conditions here, with the many laps, the short circuit and the high temperatures are similar to those at the season's highlight at Nuremberg's Norisring in three weeks. Like there, the spectators in Brands Hatch and the TV viewers can look forward to an exciting race."
