Da Costa can picture DTM return "in a few years"

Antonio Felix da Costa says he can imagine himself returning to DTM “in a few years” after completing what is set to be his final race weekend in the series for the foreseeable future at Hockenheim.

The 25-year-old former Red Bull junior took two poles in the season finale, but could only convert his starting positions into a fourth place and a DNF, as a clash with Gary Paffett took him out of contention in the second race.

It left him 17th in the standings on 43 points, and marked a disappointing end to a three-year career in the tin-top series that saw da Costa take a single win (at Zandvoort last year) and three other podiums.

His best finish in the standings was 11th last year.

Asked to summarise his DTM stint, da Costa told Motorsport.com: “Up and down, but it’s been up and down for everyone – except Marco [Wittmann], who is always there. That’s why he won the championship.

“We had some wins, some poles, some good days, some bad days. But this is DTM, it’s so competitive.

“I’m a young guy, I’m only 25, and I think I can come back in a few years and maybe the finish the book of DTM.”

Formula E focus

Following the end of his DTM tenure, da Costa now focuses solely on his Formula E commitments with the Andretti squad, which has entered into a tie-up with BMW for season three.

The Portuguese, who finished fifth in Hong Kong earlier this month, says the Bavarian marque’s increasing involvement in the all-electric series leaves him in a “good place” going forward.

“I think I’m in a good place as a driver, in my career,” he said. “At the moment it’s a strong technical partnership [between BMW and Andretti], and I’m happy to be in their plans.

“I love the Americans and the way they go racing, hopefully it will be a fun season and we can work to get a stronger package and fight for wins.”

OPINION: Facing collapse last year, the DTM has shifted its philosophy from a championship for silhouette-based touring cars to GT machines not too dissimilar to those racing across multiple series worldwide. But despite some initial BoP-based teething troubles, there were some pleasant findings as the 'new DTM' got underway at Monza
