The Italian set his time of 1m34.984s after the chequered flag fell, becoming the only driver to dip below the 1m35s barrier.

His teammate Jamie Green was leader for most of the session, with both Wittmann's and Ekstrom's initial times falling a tenth short.

However, Wittmann went quickest by six thousandths late on - only for the championship leader to be passed by Mortara and narrowly edged out of second as Ekstrom went 0.001s quicker.

Unable to improve, Green took fourth, with Miguel Molina bringing a fourth Audi into the top five.

BMW duo Maxime Martin and Tom Blomqvist took sixth and seventh respectively followed by top Mercedes driver Robert Wickens.

The top 10 was completed by two more Audis in the form of Nico Muller and Adrien Tambay.

Mercedes once again struggled, its drivers filling out six of the back seven grid spots.
