DTM action in the centre of Berlin: About 15,000 specta-tors attended demonstration laps near the Brandenburg gate, when Stefan Mücke (Mercedes-Benz), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Opel) and Emanuele Pirro (Audi) drove around a 700-metre long temporary track. Mücke was at the wheel of the C-Class AMG-Mercedes race taxi.
Escorted by the police, the race cars finally drove the 16 kilometre long way across the city to the Olympiastadion. There Mücke and Frentzen handed over the ball for the German football Cup final taking place on Saturday evening. 22,000 tickets have been sold already for the race at the Lausitzring.
Exciting DTM: Three different drivers have won the three races so far: Gary Paffett (C-Klasse AMG-Mercedes) at Hock-enheim, Christijan Albers (DaimlerChrysler Bank AMG-Mercedes) at Estoril and Mattias Ekström (Audi) at Adria. Three drivers each from Audi and Opel as well as four drivers from Mercedes-Benz are within the Top-ten of the Drivers' Championship.
Audi Sport Team Abt leads the team ranking with 35 points ahead of Vodafone/DC Bank AMG-Mercedes with 30. Mercedes-Benz leads the Manufacturers' Champion-ship with 55 points ahead of Audi with 47. Albers is first in the drivers' table with 26 points ahead of Ekström (24) and Paffett (15).
The circuit: The DTM use the Lausitzring's 4.534 kilometre long Grand Prix circuit including the front straight, the first back straight and the last corner before start and finish of the speedway.
Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:
"The Lausitzring's characteristics require aerodynamic efficiency of the DTM touring cars as well as traction accelerating out of the many narrow corners. The DTM is hard fought - the first three events this year saw three different winners. The last race's qualifying result proved the competitiveness of the championship. 20 cars were within 0.7sec and the 20th was just 0.25sec behind the tenth who was the last participant of the single-lap qualifying."
Christijan Albers:
"I'll do my best to maintain the championship lead. However, it will be hard against the strong opposition from Audi, as seen in the season's first races. I also expect a hard fight against my team mates."
