BMW had locked out the top three after the first set of flyers, with Timo Glock heading the timesheets at 1m29.003s, ahead of Bruno Spengler and Wittmann.

But championship leader Mattias Ekstrom and fellow Audi driver Miguel Molina set indentical times to break up the BMW 1-2-3 before halfway.

After a mid-session lull, the action resumed with just five minutes on the clock. And with the chequered flag looming, Jamie Green took the top spot, only for Wittmann to immediately overshadow him by going almost two tenths clear - with a lap of 1m28.810s.

Pascal Wehrlein, in a qualifying session that looked very dire for Mercedes, then salvaged a surprise front row start with a superb lap.

Green and Glock made up row two, ahead of rookie Tom Blomqvist and Ekstrom.

Spengler and Molina had to do with seventh and eighth respectively, with Daniel Juncadella in ninth as the second-best Mercedes driver and Nico Muller making up the top ten.

Debutant Antonio Giovinazzi, who replaces the suspended Timo Scheider at Audi, was 19th, seven tenths off the lead.
