Opel-teams looking forward to Norisring season highlight
The Norisring in Nuremberg is hosting the fifth season round of the DTM from June 25 till 27. Because of the special atmosphere around the only 2.3 km short street circuit at the Dutzendteich lake, the Norisring is often referred to as the 'German Monaco'.
For Opel motorsport director Volker Strycek, the race in Nuremberg is the highlight of the DTM-season: "The atmosphere is unique, fans are even closer to the action than at other race tracks. The scene is impressive: for us, so many fans are always an extra motivation."
At the Norisring, Opel will be present with its three works-teams OPC Team Holzer (Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Timo Scheider and Manuel Reuter), the OPC Team Phoenix (Laurent Aiello, Marcel Fässler and Peter Dumbreck) and the OPC Euroteam (Jeroen Bleekemolen).
Traction and top speed: it is all about set-up
Opel works-driver Manuel Reuter has numerous fond memories of the street circuit: "In the past, I have raced here with touring cars and sports cars. Back then, we drove down the main straight in qualifying with 900 horsepower flat-out and then had to brake massively before the hairpin... The Norisring is always something special."
Even though the track, with two hairpins and one chicane looks relatively easy, finding the right set-up of the race car is quite a difficult affair. Marcel Fässler: "At first sight, one would say that there isn't too much that can go wrong. But that is not the case: you have to be very good on the brakes, you need a lot of traction -- all in all, the entire package must be right. For me, all this is making the Norisring one of the most difficult circuits on which we are racing."
Manuel Reuter adds: "Concerning set-up, there are two possibilities. Either very little downforce for higher speeds on the straights or much downforce for better traction coming out of the corners. In the past few years, the tendency has gone more and more towards little downforce, which makes it easier to overtake on the straights. Under braking at the bumps, you have to find the right balance with a lot of feeling."
