The Spaniard lapped the 3.6-kilometer German track in 1m21.732 and beat BMW’s DTM rookie Tom Blomqvist to first place on the grid.

“I have always liked this track,” Molina said. “Today I really have a good car. And it’s always good to start from pole position. However, there’s still a long way to go. I have to be focused on my race.”

Molina has four previous pole starts in the DTM to his name, but is yet to claim a victory in the championship.

Another Audi driver Jamie Green finished the session in third in front of the best-placed Mercedes driver, Paul di Resta, in fourth.

Championship leader Pascal Wehrlein will line up ninth on the grid with his main title rivals Mattias Ekstrom and Edoardo Mortara only starting from 17th and 20th respectively.

“My car felt good,” Wehrlein said. “I only had one fresh set of tires left and because of that ninth was my maximum in qualifying. But I’m looking forward to the race.”

Former DTM champion Gary Paffett didn’t take part in the session, having required an engine change technical problems in today’s warm-up session.
